Almay & Simon from Neighbourhood Wine
Seasonality and simplicity served beautifully.
The term local institution gets thrown around a lot, but it’s hard to define Neighbourhood Wine in another way. Put simply, the food is comforting and delicious, and the wine list extensive and interestingly curated. But there’s a thoughtfulness and philosophy that underpins what makes Neighbourhood Wine so special.
Provenance and sustainability are valued highly and integral to the menu. Seasonality is celebrated by Head chef Almay Jordaan, whose approach is grounded in having grown up on a farm in Cape Town, where the seasons played a large part in what the family ate. The wine list - one of the biggest in Melbourne - is sourced by Simon Denman and ever-changing, highlighting different regions, varieties and vintages across the globe with a tendency toward championing wines of a more minimal intervention, lo-fi approach.
Here since 2013, Neighbourhood Wine has played a big role in making this Village pocket of the Inner North the unique and special place it is. If you haven’t visited this beloved neighbourhood bistro you haven’t fully experienced the Village. Make your way upstairs and you’ll be greeted with a warm team, making you feel welcome and cared for. They’re knowledgeable and attentive, guiding guests toward delicious pairings - ensuring your visit is memorable and that you’re perfectly satiated. This is hospitality done right.
The interior is equally warm; relaxed yet elevated in all the right ways, adorned with some of the original decor and, when timed right, bathed in afternoon light.
Whether you gather a group and book for the coveted weekly Sunday Roast, pop yourself up at the bar for a glass and a tasty bite, or chance a spot outside for Aperitivo in the sunshine, you’ll leave Neighbourhood Wine feeling content and nourished in more ways than one.
